January 19,2001: Marcy Playground is working on a new album. Or rather,
most of the band is. Dan, according to the official website, has
left the band to pursue a "normal life". In the meantime, John is working on the
new album with Jimi from Jimi's Chicken Shack and Chris Temple from the defunct
band Lincoln. Check out the interview from back in
1998 when John mentioned opening up his band to Chris should Lincoln ever go
under. Prophesy, anyone?
June 8,2000: A warm welcome to the newest member of the Marcy family! Justin Keith Wozniak was born to proud parents John and Kristen Wozniak at 6:52 pm on June 8. He was born weighing 7 lbs, 10 oz. Congratulations to the whole Wozniak clan.. John, Kristen, Keegan, Dylan and Justin! May 28, 2000: DrDrew.com has posted an interview with John Wozniak. Check it out from the links section under "Interviews and Feature Articles". Feb. 5, 2000: VideoVision San Fransisco has posted a write-up of an interview with Marcy Playground on their website. Check it out! Dec. 3, 1999: CDNow has a positive review about Shapeshifter from VH1 posted. Check it out! Nov. 13, 1999: I finally got around to adding some new promo photos. Check them out in the photo gallery. Nov. 3, 1999: Capitol Records is looking an awful lot like a kid with his hand in the cookie jar. The drummer from The Butthole Surfers, King Coffey, has accused the band of using artwork originally intended for a Butthole Surfers album cover. The painting on the cover of Shapeshifter, claims Coffey, was originally conceptualized by Paul Leary, the band's guitarist. John Wozniak has claimed the band was not informed of this. When the Butthole Surfers left Capitol Records, the artwork remained in Capitol's hands, and was then shown to Marcy when Shapeshifter was being designed. John has apologized to The Butthole Surfers, saying he never meant to steal their work, and that he truly apologizes. It seems the flap is Capitol's fault, and they do have a fair amount of explaining to do. Nov. 2, 1999: Shapeshifter is released! Go pick up your copy at local stores. October 29, 1999: The new Recess goes live!! Comments are welcome in the guestbook, accessible from the about section. Welcome one and all. I hope you like it, kids! October 25, 1999: If you missed the premier of the "It's Saturday" video last evening you can see the video at the Capitol Records Marcy Playground Site. There are also plenty of stills from the video available in the image gallery. October 20, 1999: Visit EMI Canada's Website for some unique Marcy photos from the It's Saturday video shoot, as well as virtual Marcy postcards. October 10, 1999: The video for "It's Saturday" will be premiering on MTV's 120 Minutes on Sunday (well technically Monday morning real early) Oct. 24. Check your local listings for more details. September 24, 1999: Check out the Official Capitol Records website for information on where to pre-order Shapeshifter. September 15, 1999: By way of introducing their new album, Marcy Playground will be participating in an online chat Sept 24. The chat will be hosted by launch.com. It will begin at 9pm Pacific time, or 12am (technically the 25th) for all you east-coast kids. Check it out! Ask the boys about their new album, about the upcoming tour dates, about anything! September 11, 1999: The new album is well on its way, but for superdooper fans there will be a sneak preview. If you purchase the album online, you will be able to download the songs in advance, two a week, starting September 25th. The official press release: In a first of its kind online sales initiative, Capitol Records - in association with Electric Artists, Microsoft and amplified.com - announced today that beginning Saturday, September 25th it will offer fans who pre-order Marcy Playground's upcoming release, Shapeshifter , the ability to download all twelve tracks from the album before it becomes available in stores nationwide. Shapeshifter is the follow-up album to the band's self-titled platinum debut, an album that has sold 2 million albums worldwide and produced the hit singles "Sex and Candy" and "Saint Joe on the School Bus". The sales initiative marks the first time in which a major record company and a platinum selling artist has offered fans an entire album over a 6 week period before street date. August 27, 1999: Marcy will be playing a free show in Albany on September 24th at the Empire Center. Also playing at the show will be Me and Jeremy and many other bands. For more information on this and other upcoming tour dates (there sure are a lot of them scheduled.. yahoo!) check out the Official Website's tour page. August 26, 1999: The new album is on the way! It will be in stores November 2, 1999. The tracks will be as follows: 1. Saturday (formerly Teenage Hypochondriac) The first single off the new album will be Saturday, which will be released to radio stations September 20th. Call the stations in your area and request the new Marcy Playground! July 13, 1999: The mark of a successful band, it has often been said, is being covered by Weird Al Yankovic. In his latest release "Running With Scissors", Weird Al includes a few lines from Sex & Candy on the tune Polka Power!. (Who remembers Weird Al and his girlfriend showing up at all the LA shows? Now we know the secret reason!). Along with Marcy Playground, the song covers Spice Girls, Harvey Danger, Backstreet Boys, Smash Mouth, Beastie Boys, Chumbawamba, Matchbox 20, Third Eye Blind, Marilyn Manson, Hanson, and Semisonic. "I smell sex and candy.. here.. who's that lounging in my.. chair.. who's that casting devious stares in my direction, momma this surely is a dream, yeah. Yeah momma this surely is a dream, dig it. Yeah momma this surely is Closing time.." It's worth listening to if you have the chance. July 1, 1999: The new record is on it's way! If you missed the news on the listserv or the website, here's the scoop. The new album has been recorded and mixed and is on it's way to Capitol for production. It is due out some time this fall, possibly in October. It was recorded earlier this year, and mixed by by John Wozniak and Steven Drake (of The Odds fame) in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Stay tuned for definite news on the release date, tracks, etceteras. July 1, 1999: A big congratulations to Dylan Keefe who, if I recall correctly, should have been married last month. We all wish you the best, Dylan! Another big congrats to John Wozniak on the birth of his new baby boy this past spring. The world welcomes Dylan Thomas Wozniak, the latest of the Marcy crew. February 15, 1999: I've added two versions of the song "Goodnight" to the soundboard page. The Real Audio version was recorded at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in February of 1998. The mp3 comes courtesy of Greg Boyd. February 14, 1999: I've added a short clip of "Comin Up From Behind" to the soundboard page. Go check it out, even before you can buy the album! February 8, 1999: Keep your eyes peeled for Marcy appearing in several upcoming soundtracks. The song "Angel of the Forever Sleep" will appear on the soundtrack to the movie "Simply Irresitible". Also, more importantly, the song "Comin' Up From Behind", written by Sherry Fraser, will appear on the soundtrack to "Cruel Intentions". If you wish, you can download an early version of the song at Scott Fraser's website. The version on the soundtrack will feature prominent vocals by John with the other boys and Sherry on background vocals. October 24:Audio files have been added to the interview page. I have added 15 real audio files from the interview. They range from several seconds to several minutes in length. Enjoy! October 22: There are several MP3 files now available for download via the soundboard page. Also, the audio and image files have been moved to a different server. Please let me know if you discover any incorrect links or non-functioning audio files. September 20: The Sherry Fraser video will premier this evening on MTV's 120 Minutes. The video was filmed this past August in the Mojave Desert, where Dan said it was "120 degrees in the shade!" August 20: Some dates for the fall tour have been released. For the latest tour information, check out the Official Page Tour Section. If you don't see a venue near you, be patient. More dates will be added as the logistics of the tour are worked out. August 1: Marcy Playground has cancelled their European tour, and instead they will be spending more time in the studio. They recently finished filming the video for Sherry Fraser, which is now in post-production. Filming took place in the Mojave desert, where it was 124 degrees in the stage. In fact, the girl who plays Sherry collapsed from the heat after minimal filming! But all is completed, that video is slated for release this fall. The single will be released August 31, so keep an eye (or ear, as the case may be) out for it on your local radio station. July 7: Marcy Playground will be touring Europe and possibly Australia this summer. For more information, check the official touring page. June 22: There are rumors that Marcy Playground will be embarking on a college tour in the fall of 1998. It's not confirmed yet, but there is a good possibility it may happen. Stay tuned for details. The band will definitely be returning to the studio before the end of the year, and you can probably look for the next album to be released spring of 1999. June 12: Sonicnet will be hosting a Marcy Playground chat on June 17 at 7:00 PM ET, 4:00 PM PT. You can access the chat by going to http://station.sonicnet.com. All chats use iChat Software. June 10: In the July 1998 edition of Spin magazine, there are several items of note. First, my letter to the editor was published (albeit in edited form) on page 28. The editor added in a note apologizing, saying "The statement cited above was indeed inexcusable. Spin"apologizes to the band for any pain it has caused." (The statement he was referring to was Jane Dark's comment that she wanted to blow John Wozniak's head off with a shotgun). Second, on page 127 there is a half page ad for the album Marcy Playground. It features a picture of the band (obviously from some time ago.. Dan has a fro) and the statement "sex + candy - hype= a great album". June 1: A video has been produced for St. Joe on the schoolbus. It will not likely be released in the United States, only Europe. If the single gets high enough on the charts there's a likelyhood of release to MTV, but it's a slim chance. There is a video being produced for Sherry Fraser soon as well. The band is in the process of reviewing potential directors and treatments for the video. May 1: Marcy Playground will be appearing on several dates on the HORDE tour this summer. From July 21 to August 1 the band will tour with the festival. Other acts include Blues Traveler, Barenaked Ladies, Fastball, Paula Cole, and Ben Harper. April 29: Everyone be sure to tune in on Friday, May 1 to see Marcy Playground perform on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. And look for Harmony Hayes, FooCheese, and myself in the audience. Should be quite a show. The other guests include Yasmeen Bleeth and "Seaworld animals". Oh dear. Be sure to watch! April 24: I have added several MP3s to the soundboard page. If you have any requests for specific MP3s, please let me know and I'll try my best to get them. No, I will not make MP3s directly from the album. So don't ask. April 17: Marcy Playground has been confirmed for several dates on the H.O.R.D.E. tour this summer. (HORDE stands for Horizons Of Rock Developing Everywhere.. whoever came up with that must have been seriously creatively challenged). At any rate, they'll be playing on HORDE dates from July 21st to August 2nd. For HORDE tour dates, you can visit the HORDE Festival site. They also list a phone number to call for more information. April 11: The latest addition to the Marcy online collective has been unveiled. Marcyweb, courtesy of FooCheese and BeefJello, has been a long time coming, but it's finally here. InFooMation, Tour InFoo, Opinions, Interfoos, and tons of wacky, wild stuff. Go take a peek. April 10: If anyone is in need of tickets to the May 20th Marcy Playground/Everclear show at the Hollywood Palladium, you've come to the right place. Well, sort of. Email Debbie and she'll hook you up (hopefully). April 8: Marcy Playground will be appearing on the Jay Leno show on Friday, May 1st. It's not clear if tickets are available or not. However, information on ordering tickets can be found on the NBC Tickets FAQ. April 7: Marcy Playground leaves this coming Sunday (April 11) for their European tour. We wish them the best of luck! Let's just hope they don't get too carried away in any German lager joints. April 3: The kickoff date for the European tour will be April 19 in Belgium. Dan's hand should hopefully be healed by then (he fractured it playing basketball). April 1: After the European tour, they will embark on a tour of the US with Everclear and Fastball. The kickoff will be May 19 in San Fransisco. All 3 acts will also be appearing at the WHFStival on May 16 in Washington DC. The WHFStival is an all day festival featuring bands, vendors, etc. Last year's crowd was in the range of 60,000 people. Also slated to appear are the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, the Barenaked Ladies, Green Day, Soul Coughing, Scott Weiland, Chrystal Method, Foo Fighters, and more. Information is available at the WHFS website. For tour dates, try the official touring page. March 25, 1998: The album will not be released in Korea. The Korean government wanted the track Opium removed from the album, but Marcy refused. March 25, 1998: Marcy Playground will not be appearing on Saturday Night Live due to contract problems. (SNL wanted S&C not played on Letterman, but that was a contract no-no). So it goes. March 24, 1998: Marcy Playground has released a single of Sex & Candy. It features the tracks Memphis and Angel of the Forever Sleep in addition to S&C. For more information about this single, check the discography page. March, 1998:You can find a clip of the Sex & Candy video on the MTV website. To download it, shift-click on this link. Feb 14: The song St. Joe On The School Bus has been released as a single on KWOD in Sacramento and was played 9 times last week (roughly once or twice a day). Assuming all goes well on KOME and other affiliates, you can expect St. Joe to be played on major alternative stations like KROQ and WHFS in the next few weeks. It was voted the #1 best new song on KFOG in San Fransisco this week during one of the nightly new music countdowns. No plans for a video have been released yet, but if things go as well as they have for Sex & Candy, you can expect another big hit from the boys! Feb 1: John's writing a book! Assumedly, it will follow along the lines of his science fiction and fantasy influences. "It does have that sort of Tom Robbins level of reality to it," said John in an interview for JamTV. The working title for it is Joy to the Fishes. Who knows if and when it will be published. I for one would love to read it! (hint hint..) |
